It is normal for it to be clear. Brewing Slippery Elm in a tea bag requires a slightly different approach than your average herbal tea. Because the inner bark is rich in mucilage (the "slippery" part), it expands and creates a thick, gel-like substance that can lead to broken bags if you aren't careful.

The "Gently Press" Method 

1. Steep with Care: Place one tea bag in your mug and pour 8 oz of freshly boiled water over it.   
2. Cover to Keep Heat In: Cover your mug with a lid or small saucer. This helps the bark expand fully and ensures you get the most soothing benefits. Steep for 10–15 minutes.    
3. Deflate Before Pressing: These bags often expand and trap air. Lift the bag out of the water for a few seconds to let it deflate. 
4. Press, Don't Squeeze: Instead of using a spoon to wring it out (which often causes the wet paper to tear), gently press the bag against the side of the cup with the back of a spoon. This releases the concentrated "goodness" without the risk of a messy "tea bag explosion.
